Diary of a Watchmaker.

How often should I have my watch serviced? I get asked this all the time, and the first thing I would ask is what is your definition of a service? Having the battery changed, or even the seals changed is not a complete service, though these do keep the watch going and prevent damage from the elements.

A complete service is the stripping down and cleaning of all the components in the watch - a process that removes the old oil - and fresh lubricant is applied. Worn parts, seals, mainsprings, glasses etc would also be changed.

Oftentimes I hear "I paid a lot of money for this watch, it shouldn't need servicing". Think of your time piece as a car, albeit one that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All things mechanical require periodic maintenance, and a watch, regardless of cost, also requires occasional care. As a guideline, manufacturers recommend a complete service every 3-5 years.

Another factor that may impact the running and accuracy of your watch is accidental damage. Watches are first and foremost precision timekeeping instruments and an unlucky light fall or knock can cause damage. For instance, a hand may be knocked loose, and a floating baton on the dial can hide more damage to the inside of the movement.
